Kwaidan (or kaidan) is a Japanese word: Kai meaning a 'strange and mysterious apparition' and dan means 'story' or 'folk tale'. Based on some of the Japanese ghost stories compiled in the book Kwaidan - Stories and Studies of Strange Things by Lafcadio Hern, London-Brazilian Dende Collective and Contact Young Actors Company create a world where dark forces and evil spirits interact with humans and change their destinies forever.
Kwaidan - Japanese Ghost Stories uses Dende Collective's trademark mix of styles (masks, puppets and physical theatre) whilst paying homage to the aesthetics of Japanese traditional theatre forms and manga.
The performances are at the Contact Theatre in Manchester at 8:00pm on Thursday 18 to Saturday 20 December 2008. Tickets cost GBP 8.00 (GBP 5.00 concessions) and are available from the Contact Theatre box office.
For more details, see the Contact Theatre website and the Dende Collective website.
