Ghost in the Shell 2 - Innocence (Inosensu: Koukaku kidoutai) film screenings at the Cornerhouse, Manchester

2 to 6 December 2005

Dir. Mamoru Oshii, 2004; Cert. 15; 1hr40mins; Subtitled

'As gloriously impenetrable as its title, and even more visually spectacular than its precursor, Oshii's new anime can be most simply described as an animated film noir populated by existential cyborgs... A nominal sequel, Innocence draws on Blade Runner, Dirty Harry, and the surrealist artist Hans Bellmer... You can call me fanboy, but this is the best anime I've ever seen.' J. Hoberman, village Voice.

The second instalment of the cult anime. In the year 2032, Batou, a cyborg detective for the anti-terrorist unit Public Security Section 9, is investigating the case of a female robot created specially for sexual companionship that malfunctions and slaughters her owner.
