Godzilla (Gojira) film screening at the Cornerhouse, Manchester

Saturday 6 August 2005

Dir. Ishiro Honda, 1954; Cert. PG; 1hr36min; Subtitled

When Godzilla was initially released in the West, it was a strangely re-edited, dubbed US cut. Now for the first time, the complete uncut, Japanese classic hits the big screen with a ferocious power and intensity that was masked by the plastic surgery on the previous version. Although the monster's roots are defined as Jurassic, it's clear he's really moulded from radioactive dust, like some Cold War Golem. When the radioactive giant lizard emerges from Tokyo Bay, his nightly raids on the city leave panic, decimation and death in their fiery wake, echoing experiences of less than a decade earlier.
