The Cat Returns (Neko No Ongaeshi) film screenings at the Cornerhouse, Manchester

27 May to 9 June 2005

Dir. Morita Hiroyuki, 2002; Cert. U; 1hr15min; Subtitled

Based on the manga Baron, Neko no Danshaku by Hiiragi Aoi, The Cat Returns is also a loose sequel to Whisper of the Heart. Morita's directorial début offers classic Studio Ghibli material -- a little girl inducted into a fanciful but dangerous other world from which she must find her way home. Haru is a suburban schoolgirl who rescues a cat from in front of a speeding lorry and is amazed to find herself thanked by the feline. But that's nothing compared to the entourage that shows up when it turns out that pussy's in fact a prince of the secret Kingdom of Cats and his father the King has an offer for Haru that she can't refuse... Beautifully rendered, touchingly humanist and cheekily comic, The Cat Returns will leave audiences of all ages purring with pleasure.
