Nobody Knows (Dare Mo Shiranai) film screenings at the Cornerhouse, Manchester

7 to 13 January 2005

Dir. Hirokazu Koreeda, 2004; Cert. 12; 2hr21min; Subtitled

The director of Afterlife and Maborosi offers this beautifully observed tale of childhood, based on real events in '80s Japan. Nobody Knows is laced with poignant and lyrical moments in its otherwise realist mode. A single mother leaves her 12-year-old son Akira some cash and a note to take care of his three siblings till she returns. When he begins to doubt her return, Akira struggles to keep the clandestine family together and safe. The young cast was selected through open auditions and are all impressive, but it's Yagira Yuya as Akira who carries the film, earning him the Best Actor award at the last Cannes Film Festival.
