A Page of Madness (Kurutta Ippeiji) film screening at the Cornerhouse, Manchester

Thursday 4 March 2004

Dir. Teinosuke Kinugasa, 1926; Cert. PG; 1hr0min

From its startling opening montage to its expressionist distortions, stylised imagery, and fractured narrative structure, A Page of Madness remains a thoroughly modernist and radical film. Less seen, but equally shocking in its vision as the work of Eisenstein or the German Expressionist directors, it's the story of an old sailor who works as a janitor at an asylum to be near his insane wife who is interned there.

In a perfect match to the film's frenetic imagery, percussion group Left Hand Right Hand will perform their specially written score live.
