Takeshi's riff on the Yakuza genre introduces shades of wit and introspection to the more traditional element of violence. The witty and stylish yakuza thriller that launched Takeshi Kitano in the UK, Sonatine is the story of a hit-man whose forced involvement in a gang war gives him doubts about his chosen field. Like The Killer, the film's pace and style marked a refreshing take on the genre.
